In 1043, Ramon Berenguer the 1st bestowed Conesa to Bernat Seniofred, on condition that the latter would build a fortress, cultivate the soil and turn out the infidels of his estate. One half was given as a fief and the other as a freehold. Around 1073 the castle had already been built and was surrounded by a small village. In 1120, Ramon de Cervera was the Lord of Conesa. Although Bernat de Conesa (he probably was a descendant from the Seniofred family) had some rights over the place. During the 13th century, the domain got under the counts' authority who gave it to the Cervera family as a fief, and to the Vallclara-Conesa and Montpaó families as a manor. From the Cervera's the domain passed to the Guardialada family that years later transferred their rights to the Order of the El Sant Hospital and to the Cervelló family.
Even though in the 14th century, the number of
inhabitants increased and consolidated , in the next
century the devastating epidemics and the war against
Joan the 2nd diminished the population. Other important incidents were the disentailment of 1835 and the cholera epidemic that devastated the place. |
